Women in Religion

I found an article in Time magazine entitled "How Religious Women can Fix Sexual Politics" by Phyllis W. Curott. I found this to be one of the most stimulation articles involving religion this whole semester.
It discusses the convention of the Inaugural Women's Assembly held on October 15, 2015 in Salt Lake City. This consists of "Delit feminists, African environmentalists, Israeli and Palestinian peace activists, Indigenous Elders, Episcopal priests, Wiccan priestesses, green nuns and Maori-Mormon womanists from New Zealand."

All of these groups consist of women who are viewed as insuperior to the men in their culture and religion. They met to discuss how they can become equals and reduce the amount of raping and genital mutilation. By creating gender equality and educating the population, millions of rapes and genitalia mutilations would be decreased. Women would be seen as equals and could be more active in the progression of their religious groups.

In our readings, women have been seen as minorities for hundreds of years in countless religions. They are unable to partake in the democratic systems of the clergies even though they partake in more religious activities than men. It's heart warming to see women of differentiating religious backgrounds to come together to create one change that can help them all. They may see the world differently in regards to their religion but they all share one common goal; to be equal to men.

I encourage anyone who believes in gender equality to read this article and look into the issues women face on a daily basis.
